We believe in the motto ’Each One Teach One;’ by the late Dame Jocelyn Barrow (1929-2020).
Dame Jocelyn born in the Port of Spain Trinidad travelled to England in 1959 to begin postgraduate studies at the Institute of Education in London. Dame Jocelyn was brought up in a family who imbued great confidence in her and from a personal experience she has done the same with many professionals who she has mentored and coached over the years directly or indirectly during a simple conversation. She was a remarkable woman who engaged with all age groups.
Her entry into teaching in England exposed her to racism dominated in all areas of life and institutions, education being one of these. The level of discrimination towards BAMEd children was in humane. Observing how Black and Asian families were discriminated against she set up an organisation, Each One Teach One, to empower, to help them understand the education system to create a voice for change.
There has been change since the early days through legislation; however, the journey has been too slow. It is time to leap forwards to have an education system which is inclusive, reflecting our society embracing cultural differences and tackles racial inequality.
Our Pledge is to engage with like-minded professionals who seek change, your voice is integral to progress now and for the future.
What do we want?
How?
Our aim is to work together collaboratively to inspire and meet the needs of the South East through your stories and aspirations.
